Cross Correlation versus Mutual Information for Image Mosaicing

چکیده
This paper reviews the concept of image mosaicking and presents a comparison between two of the most common image mosaicing techniques. The first technique is based on normalized cross correlation (NCC) for registering overlapping 2D images of a 3D scene. The second is based on mutual information (MI). The experimental results demonstrate that the two techniques have a similar performance in most cases but there are some interesting differences. The choice of a distinctive template is critical when working with NCC. On the other hand, when using MI, the registration procedure was able to provide acceptable performance even without distinctive templates. But generally the performance when using MI with large rotation angles was not accurate as with NCC. Keywords—mosaicing; normalized cross correlation; mutual information

Evaluation of Similarity Measures for Template Matching
Image matching is a critical process in various photogrammetry, computer vision and remote sensing applications such as image registration, 3D model reconstruction, change detection, image fusion, pattern recognition, autonomous navigation, and digital elevation model (DEM) generation and orientation. The primary goal of the image matching process is to establish the correspondence between two ...
متن کاملMatch Selection in Batch Mosaicing Using Mutual Information
Large area photo-mosaics are widely used in many different applications such as optical mapping, panorama creation and autonomous vehicle navigation. When the trajectory of the camera provides an overlap between non-consecutive images (closed-loop trajectory), it is essential to detect such events in order to get globally coherent mosaics. Recent advances in image matching methods allow for reg...
متن کاملA Novel Subsampling Method for 3D Multimodality Medical Image Registration Based on Mutual Information
Mutual information (MI) is a widely used similarity metric for multimodality image registration. However, it involves an extremely high computational time especially when it is applied to volume images. Moreover, its robustness is affected by existence of local maxima. The multi-resolution pyramid approaches have been proposed to speed up the registration process and increase the accuracy of th...

This project aims to present the applicability of optimization techniques towards image registration. The problem of image registration is reformulated as an optimization problem and a simple algorithm based on the steepest descent method is developed and analyzed. Two similarity measures, normalized cross correlation and mutual information, are introduced and their use for optimization based i...
متن کاملImage versus feature mosaicing: A case study in fingerprints
Fingerprint mosaicing entails the reconciliation of information presented by two or more impressions of a finger in order to generate composite information. It can be accomplished by blending these impressions into a single mosaic, or by integrating the feature sets (viz., minutiae information) pertaining to these impressions. In this work, we use Thin-plate Splines (TPS) to model the relative ...
